Thursday 25th January is Young Carers Awareness Day and this year, the main focus is ‘The Youngest Carers’
Carers as young as five-years-old have to care for a family member due to physical disability, illness, mental ill health or substance misuse issues. They take on the practical and/or emotional caring responsibilities that would normally be expected of an adult. This includes completing practical tasks (e.g. cooking, housework), personal care (e.g. washing, dressing), administering medication and more and this all needs to be done before they go to school and again when they come home. Being a carer can restrict them from having a childhood.
As you may be aware, Blackpool Carers Centre provides family support and respite activities that allow carers to be children again which is important for their emotional health and wellbeing. Young Carers are, and will be, part of the workplace, so they need to be identified as soon as possible in order to receive vital support and fulfill their aspirations and potential.
We will be holding 2 special events today at The Carers Centre, Beaverbrooks House, 147 Newton Drive, Blackpool FY3 8LZ:
Meet the Team – 12.00 noon-3.30pm
Everyone is welcome, including professionals and young carers and their families, to find out what services we provide for the Young Carers from 12pm to 4pm.
Professionals’ Q&A Panel for Young Carers – 4.00-6.00pm
This is the main event that focuses on Young Carers.
We all want the best for the children and young people we support in Blackpool. So this is your chance to get a valuable insight into our service and how professionals can play a part in identifying and supporting Young Carers.
Young Carers will pose questions and professionals will also have the opportunity to ask questions. We see this as an opportunity to invest in the wellbeing of Young Carers.
If you are a professional or young carer and would like to attend today’s events please contact Rachel Lambert on 01253 393748 or email firstname.lastname@example.org by Thursday 18th January to book your place.
Refreshments will be served so prior booking is required for catering purposes.
